From form comes substance, from substance comes impulse

When we think of ‘performance’ or ‘artistic practice’, we quickly come to the questions of production and output. In other words, a way of working that is closer and closer to productivity and efficiency, and therefore to a system that is closer to capitalist thinking. The idea of this Try Out is to free up time for research.

For this first Try out, Yasmine invites Leya Touch, a Brussels-based composer and performer, to join her research. Leya develops a musical universe centered around voice and sound synthesis. They start from a quote by Jacques Chirac: “If you add to that the noise and the smell, well, the French worker on the landing goes mad.”

Over two seasons (2024-2025 and 2025-2026), Yasmine Yahiatène will present 3 Try outs. The first will take place from April 14 to 19, 2025: research from April 14 to 18, a performance on April 18 at 7:30 PM, and April 19 at 6:30 PM, in the foyer of Théâtre Les Tanneurs.

But what is a Try out?
Like a researcher in the sciences, Yasmine Yahiatène approaches the Try outs with no intention of production or creation, spreading them across calendars that extend over several years. She invites expert artists from various artistic fields, with whom multiple unique performances will emerge.

What happens when we take the time to reflect on our medium? When we decide to embrace the idea that not all research always produces a result? The Try outs aim to embed an artistic gesture in a political act, offering an alternative to a productivity-driven way of thinking.

These research acts encourage encounters between artists, allowing for movement, circulation, and sharing of materials. They offer the opportunity to experiment with a raw gesture and to maintain an active practice, even during long periods between creations. The idea is to take hold of a subject or a desire and work on it quickly, over 4 or 5 days, to present it to the audience immediately afterward. This process also reveals the stages of creation, bringing together both the audience and the artists.

Free event, no booking required.
