When we think of 'performance' or 'artistic practice', we often focus on production and output. This Try Out seeks to create space for research and exploration.

Like a science researcher, Yasmine Yahiatène thinks of the Try-outs without any desire for production and creation. It calls upon expert artists from various backgrounds or personalities invited according to the themes. From these meetings will rise several unique performances.

For this 3rd Try out, Yasmine Yahiatène invites the artists Şengül Özdemir and Laure Lapel to work with her, around the creation of masks and their sonorization.

Laure works on sound, Şengül creates a universe with her masks and installations and Yasmine decided to invite them to mix their 3 worlds between sound, plastic creation and meaning.

Şengül Özdemir (1996, La Louvière) works between installation and performance, developing a universe inspired by the carnival and its ability to transform bodies, gather and reverse roles. From this research was born Karnavalo, an imaginary territory that she lives and crosses. Her work explores memory, imprint and ritual through the body, costume and object, thought as tools of transformation. Karnavalo is a space of reinvention: an intimate carnival where colors, metamorphoses and traces become sensitive archives. The costume, the mask, the ambulation are gestures of liberation and transmission. Anchored in reality, her phantasmagoric universe questions heritages, identities and looks, and is defined as a carnival tale in constant evolution.

Şengül Özdemir received the first prize from the City of Tournai in 2023 and the 2026 Elisabeth Burdot Prize for Textile Arts.

Laure Lapel is a director and actress, graduated from INSAS in Brussels after studying at the George Bizet Conservatory in Paris. She also holds a master’s degree in sociology. Her work explores social boundaries, gentrification and the voice of the “invisible” within urban space.
